Smith joined a small group of people who were laying the foundation for really good California beer, looking for the knowledge and ingredients for excellent small quantity brewing. He teamed up with a small group of investors in 1989 to form Mad River Brewing Company.

After nearly two decades the company continues its commitment to brewing fine ales, using the most traditional brewing methods in an environmentally sound way. The results are award winning brews which have become widely known for their unique flavor and excellent quality.

Lost Coast Brewery
617 Fourth St. , Eureka CA

Their own brewpub! That’s what pharmacist Barbara Groom and counselor Wendy Pound were dreaming about in 1986. Years of experimental home brewing started combining with planning, studying and traveling to pub after pub throughout England and Wales. By 1989 Wendy and Barbara were ready to for dreams to come true in the form of more good California beer and the perfect place to enjoy it! They purchased the historic Pythian Castle, a 100-year-old Eureka building, spent half a year remodeling, and opened the Lost Coast Brewery and Cafe in July of 1990.

Eureka’s year round average temperature, 55 degrees Fahrenheit, has proved to be ideal for top-fermenting ale yeast. Embracing the rich tradition of English-style ales, Master Brewer Barbara Groom adds Western Plains barley and wheat, plus pure, clean Humboldt County water, producing very good California beer.

Growth was inevitable. Outgrowing its original facilities, Lost Coast moved production to a larger site while keeping the cafe going, and now expects annual production to top 40,000-barrels, making it the 37th largest craft brewery in the nation, distributing good California beer in 19 states.
